The Town Hall has accused an energy firm, providing power to thousands of households in the borough, of being “in breach” of its contract.

Robin Hood Energy, a not-for-profit provider set up by Nottingham City Council, went into administration last month after building up millions of pounds of debt and was sold to Centrica, the parent company of British Gas.

Robin Hood provided gas and electricity to Islington Council’s municipal provider, Angelic Energy.

Around 3,000 households were convinced to switch to Angelic after it was launched in 2017 but now face the prospect of being transferred to British Gas.

Speaking at a committee meeting Islington’s corporate director of environment Keith Townsend said: “We do believe that Robin Hood energy were in breach of contract with us.

“One, they failed to notify us in the proper way and two, some of the agreements they made with British Gas they technically weren’t actually permitted to do so under the contract they had with Islington. We feel it is appropriate to inform them of that and seek their response.”

He added that the council was now trying to contact all Angelic Energy customers and convince them to join London Power – a new municipal energy venture set up by at City Hall.

Labour councillor Paul Convery said: “In 2018, after a year of the Angelic operation, the former executive member reminded us that, and I quote her, ‘Islington Council had made history by launching London’s municipal energy prover in more than a century’.

“Today we are reflecting on the fact we have seen the close down of London’s first municipal energy provider in more than a century.”

The Tribune contacted Nottingham City Council for a response but a spokesman told us to contact Robin Hood Energy directly.

Robin Hood Energy declined to comment.
