Best Labour result in Islington in my lifetime
11 May, 2018
• AT the local elections last week, Labour received the overwhelming support of local people for our plans to make Islington a fairer place for all.
I want to thank each and every person who voted for Labour. We received more than 100,000 individual votes for the first time in our history and our share of the vote increased by five per cent to 61 per cent. This was the best result for Islington Labour in my lifetime and since 1974.
I am incredibly proud that, for the first time, the majority of Labour councillors are female. During this campaign, we have had conversations with more than 35,000 local people, listening to the issues that matter to them.
We were the only party to put forward a positive vision for a future where Islington is a fairer place for all. I am delighted so many people have supported that vision.
We will, of course, remain an open, transparent and listening council – putting the views and concerns of local people at the heart of all we do.
All of the Labour councillors elected are first and foremost champions for their communities. They will ensure the voices and needs of local people are heard in the Town Hall.
Along with your support, our bold plans to build more new, genuinely affordable homes, to help more people into work and to give all young people the best start in life will help make Islington a fairer place for all.
These election results send a clear message to the Tory government that local people reject their unfair policies – especially their massive cuts to police.
Thank you to everyone for your support.
