Calvin Bungisa murder: Police appealing for ‘key witness’
Police say 'strong possibility' Calvin’s murder in Gospel Oak was gang related
08 April, 2019 — By Samantha Booth
DETECTIVES are appealing for a “key witness” who could help police find the suspects who killed Calvin Bungisa in Gospel Oak.
Officers have also revealed on the week anniversary of the 22-year-old’s death there is a “strong possibility” his murder was gang related.
Dash-cam footage has been released by police today showing a car reversing seconds before Calvin is attacked in Grafton Road on Monday, April 1 at about 8.30pm.
No arrests have yet been made.
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Cranwell, who is leading the murder investigation, said: “It is a week since Calvin was murdered and we are committed to finding out who took his life in this brutal and merciless attack.
“The response from the public so far has been excellent and is helping us piece together the events which led to the murder. However the flow of information has now slowed and we have yet to trace the car seen in the CCTV footage.
“The CCTV footage shows a car, possibly dark in colour, reversing as Calvin is attacked. It is unclear what the make or model is.
“It is very possible that the driver remains unaware that they were witness to a murder in action. The attack would have been frightening to witness and it is understandable that they would have wanted to leave the area as quickly as possible.
“If you are the driver in the footage, please come forward and talk to us. You are a key witness and your help could help bring murderers to justice and closure to a grieving family.”
Flowers left in tribute to Calvin at the scene
Speaking of gang involvement, DCI Cranwell said in a statement: “It is also a strong possibility that Calvin’s murder was gang related and sadly, we know there are a number of people who know what happened, but have yet to share this with us.
“Specifically there were a group of young, black males who we know were with Calvin prior to his murder and we want to speak to them. If this was you, and Calvin was your friend, or even if you knew him indirectly, please consider doing the right thing.
“He has mother, sister, brothers and grandmother, who are grieving and need to know why he was killed.
“If you do not want to speak to us as police officers directly, call Crimestoppers and pass on information anonymously.”
Police say they believe several male suspects ran out of Vicar’s Road and chased Calvin down Grafton Road before fatally attacking him. They then ran back into Vicar’s Road and got into a car, which drove off in the direction of Weedington Road.
They added the car was found burnt out the day after and has been “forensically recovered”.
They are also appealing for a phone belonging to Calvin which they believe was removed from the scene of the murder to be handed in.
Calvin’s family are being supported by specialist officers.
