DOZENS of Islington teenagers are gearing up to perform at the Notting Hill Carnival.

About 40 youngsters met at Lift youth club in Angel on Wednesday to put the finishing touches to their Alice in Wonderland-themed show that they will perform at the iconic Afro-Caribbean celebration in west London.

The show, now in its fifth year, is organised by the Indigo Project who run a five-week summer programme for 14- to 24-year-olds in the borough.

Stephanie Papadopoulos, Indigo Project founder and director, said: “The idea is to get them to channel their energy in a creative way. They all partake in the construction of the project, whether they sewed the costumes, created choreographies, chose the music or wrote the script.”

Arjay, 17, will be performing for the first time this year and he has taken on the role of the Mad Hatter. “When I heard about this project I thought I had to be part of it,” he said.

Once the carnival performance is finished, they will then take to the stage at the Platform Youth Hub in Tiltman Place, Holloway, next Thursday.
