Cut out the grass cutting

22 May, 2020

• MOMENTS after learning that May 20 was World Bee Day I heard the dreaded sound of Camden Council’s grass mowers in action.

Why the peculiar urban preference for converting all green areas into ultra-manicured lawns?

All verges, and even fenced-off areas of greenery unused for any recreational purpose, are subject to this costly and unnecessary treatment.

Wild flowers struggling to establish themselves are mown down, reducing their prospects for re-emergence next year producing neat but sterile areas of green uniformity.

But this is not just a matter of aesthetics. Every flowering dandelion is food for insects, which pollinate plants and are food for birds.

The biodiversity of our environment is undermined by this horticultural fascism. Can we have a more rational policy?
