Police are trying to trace a cyclist who helped officers detain a murder suspect after a man was stabbed to death in the middle of the day in Camden Town.

The 20-year-old victim was found suffering knife wounds in Hampstead Road at around 11:45am. He was treated on the pavement next to the Ampthill estate by medics, but was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives want to speak to a cyclist who was riding through Harrington Street shortly after the stabbing and assisted officers as they made an arrest.

A delivery driver, who asked not to be named, said he saw the aftermath of the stabbing.

He told the New Journal: “A man was screaming they stabbed him, they stabbed him and then I saw three boys running away and the police officer chase after them with his baton.

“The police were here so quick, it’s like they were around the corner. The constable told me they caught one of the boys.”

Onlooker Alex Harris said: “I was walking back from the shops. I’ve got a pint of milk in my hand and I walk past the guy and I saw what looked like a big gaping hole in his side. There were paramedics around him. They were giving him a blood transfusion. I don’t know who he is. One of my friends went over there and said he’s not from around here.”

She added: “It was broad daylight. It was the morning. Who is doing this sort of thing in the middle of the day, there could of been kids playing there witnessing it.”

Scotland Yard said: “The man police wish to hear from was riding a pedal cycle through Harrington Street shortly after the incident and assisted an officer who was arresting a suspect.

“The cyclist or anyone else who witnessed this incident or has information is asked to contact the HMCC on their incident room number of 0208 785 8099 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.”

A 17-year-old male arrested on suspicion of murder remains in custody.
