Declare a climate emergency here – sign up!

21 March, 2019

• THE United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has concluded that we have only 12 years at most to avoid catastrophic global warming.

Last Friday the school children’s climate strike in response spread to 100 countries.

Finally those who have been trying for decades to be heard on this critical issue have a real chance of persuading our governments that most people not only would like to survive the 21st century, but are prepared to make modest sacrifices to do so.

One way we can all add our voices, without striking or risking arrest, is by signing a petition to declare a climate emergency.

This action by ordinary people has already persuaded 41 councils to do so, in effect promising to become carbon neutral, in most cases by 2030, and setting up structures to hold themselves to that commitment.

They include Bristol, Bradford, Cambridge, Liverpool, Manchester, Nottingham, Sheffield, and the London boroughs of Lambeth, Enfield and Lewisham.

Many more petitions are on their way to success. I’ve just heard Haringey has declared a climate emergency. Perhaps at last we have the (renewable) wind in our sails.

There is now a petition in Camden, asking our council to declare such an emergency. Sign it at:

On your own, giving up a car for a bike, or drinking oat milk, may seem a trivial gesture. But as the Swedish schoolgirl Greta Thunberg is showing, together we can change the world. Quite a result for a signature. Please consider it!
