Don’t panic! Think what happens when you hoard

• A WARNING to those whose anxiety about the future is translated into a mad rush for toilet rolls.
Back in the 1970s, for some reason that nobody can remember, there was a sudden panic about sugar.
And of all the crazy hoarders, none could beat my nan. We lived in a small flat at the time, and one way or another, every inch of storage space was packed full of 2lb bags – hundreds of them.
At first my nan’s generosity was appreciated in the neighbourhood as any visitor would get a going-home gift of the precious stuff. But the crisis (whatever it was) passed and with the years was forgotten.
My nan’s habit of pressing a bag of sugar on parting guests became at first unnecessary, then irritating, and finally plain bonkers and embarrassing even for her.
Years later when we were clearing out the flat after she died, there were still 18 bags hidden in various odd spaces.
