Faeces the facts…

‘Of course, the dogs themselves are not to blame’
• THE faeces of many animals provide a valuable clue to the creature it came from.
As a professional ecologist, I regularly deal with animal sh*t and I can totally reassure J Edwards (Dogs seem to get the blame for everything, October 24) that the “dog muck” on the pavements is all but exclusively deposited by dogs, and not by foxes (or badgers!).
What is clear is that random dog faeces are not only unpleasant and hazardous, but also adversely affect “semi-natural” habitats, such as those which comprise Hampstead Heath.
Of course, the dogs themselves are not to blame. As dog owners, it is our responsibility to remove any deposits our canine friends may leave on the pavement, and on the Heath.
