THE Royal National Hotel in Russell Square hosted an emotional night of boxing on Friday as fighters from across the country paid tribute to a man who changed the lives of thousands of youngsters in north London.

More than 400 spectators flocked to the special fight night in Bloomsbury as Islington Boxing Club held their fourth home show of the season. Before the action got underway there was a traditional 10-bell salute for club founder member, Ron Hagland, who died in March at the age of 86, followed by a minute of applause.

The thrilling 10-bout show was the perfect tribute to Mr Hagland as fight fans were treated to a night of top class entertainment.

Competing at 70kg, Jason Mallia produced one of the stand-out performances as he unanimously beat Essex University’s Reese Wade – a victory that earned the Islington man the “Best Home Boxer of the Night” award.
