A MAN has been found dead after a blaze in a “derelict” council block.

The “unexplained” death was discovered after firefighters rushed to the second floor two-bedroom flat in Aspen House, part of the Maitland park estate.

Residents were supposed to have been moved into temporary accommodation ahead of major demolition works. Four fire engines and 35 firefighters were called following several calls from the public around 3.30pm on Friday.

“The cause of the fire is not known at this stage,” said the LFB, which described the building as “derelict”.

Construction of 119 homes is due to begin in the summer as part of the council’s Community Investment Programme (CIP). A gym, garages and the Maitland Park estate’s TRA Hall is also being knocked down as part of the major works.

A council statement said: “The London Fire Brigade have confirmed that a person has been found dead at the property. We are deeply saddened by this news. The London Fire Brigade are investigating the cause of the fire with which they have our full support. We will be working with them to understand what has happened.”

A Met Police spokeswoman said: “We were called at approximately 3.30pm on Friday, to reports of a fire at a derelict building in Maitland Park Villas, NW3.

Officers attended the scene with LFB and LAS.

A body – no further details – was found deceased within the property.

“Enquiries continue to establish the identity and inform next of kin.

The cause death is yet to be determined and being is currently being treated as unexplained at this time.

“Enquiries are ongoing. A scene is likely to be in place for several days, but there will be no disruption to local residents or businesses.

Anyone with information is asked to call 101, Tweet @MetCC quoting CAD 4830 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
