A SPRINKLER system helped save the famous Stables Market from being wrecked by a fire last night (Monday), the London Fire Brigade believes.
Firefighters were at the indoor market in Chalk Farm Road close to midnight after a blaze – thought to have been caused by an electrical fault – began on one of the stalls. Security called for help after hearing a smoke alarm and seeing the automatic water sprinkler system activated. Crews from Soho, West Hampstead, Euston and Paddington said this helped contain the fire.
A London Fire Brigade spokesman said: “This incident highlights the clear benefits of sprinklers to businesses and we would urge all companies and business owners to install them. In this case the sprinklers controlled the fire spread, limiting damage to the building and preventing anyone from being put at risk from any fire.”
He added: “As well as limiting fire damage and being potentially life-saving devices, sprinklers and other fire suppression systems help with business continuity by minimising disruption and allowing businesses to get back to normal as soon as possible.”
It was the second visit of the evening to Camden Town for firefighters, who had earlier tackled a blaze at a shop in Camden High Street.
