THE bravery of firefighters who tackled a major fire at Camden Lock in the early hours of Monday has been praised by stallholders.
Mhairi McGeachy, who runs Books Iconica, told the New Journal her business had lost around 80 per cent of its stock but said everyone connected to the market wanted to thank the fire crews who worked for three hours to stop the blaze spreading further.
She said: “The firefighters were fantastic. They worked so hard to contain it and save what they could. We are all extremely thankful for their courage.”
More than 70 firefighters scrambled from stations in Kentish Town, Holloway, Euston, Soho and Paddington to answer 37 calls that the market was gripped by flames. They brought in a special high-reach ladder to spray water from above the fire, which took hold over three floors.
Daniel Morris, who runs the Camden Tea Company on the ground floor of the building, said: “I just want to thank the emergency services, big time. They have saved my business. Compared to others, we were relatively unaffected.”
