For the birds… Lewis’s special birthday gift

A BOY took his friends litter-picking on his birthday in a bid “to save the penguins and the pigeons”.

Lewis Murphy, who turned eight last Thursday, said he learnt about plastic pollution in his lessons at Eleanor Palmer School in Tufnell Park and from watching Blue Planet presenter Sir David Attenborough on television.

He said: “I wanted to do something good on my birthday. I think plastic is killing animals like the pigeons and the penguins.”

Lewis wrote to his friends, inviting them to join him for his litter-picking birthday celebration, and added: “Please don’t give me any object that is made with plastic.”

He is also writing a letter to Sir David to ask which charity is best to donate his birthday money to.

Lewis is following in the footsteps of the “Youth Strike 4 Climate” school protests, which took place earlier this year in more than 60 towns and cities.

“I want to stop using plastic to stop global warming,” said Lewis.

The team of eight-year-olds, with adult supervision, went litter-picking and recycled plastics found in Granary Square and around King’s Cross Station last Friday.
