Golden goals! Talented Yerbury clinch the cup

Primary school sports extravaganza as youngsters from Camden and Islington chase trophies

Yerbury went goal-crazy as they captured the Year 3&4 Primary Schools Cup

THERE was defiant defending, silky skills and plenty of glorious match-winning goals as scores of talented young footballers laced up their boots to tackle the Islington Football Development Partnership Primary Schools Cup.

Held at the artificial pitches at Market Road in Islington, the boys’ team from Yerbury School, in Holloway, were simply unstoppable in front of goal as they found the back of the net a staggering 19 times in just five matches.

In the end it took just the one goal to see them crowned the Year 3&4 champions as they beat Canonbury School 1-0 in a closely fought final.

“The quality of the football from the players in this age group was exceptional,” said Michael MacNeill, who works for the Islington Football Development Partnership, a project run by Islington Leisure Team, GLL and Arsenal in the Community.

Canonbury made a case for the defence as they won the Year 5&6 Cup

“It was probably the highest standard of football that we’ve seen from this age group in all the years that we have been running this competition.”

There was still plenty of reason for footballers from Highbury-based Canonbury School to celebrate. Having taken the runners-up spot in the Year 3&4 Cup, they went one better in the Year 5&6 competition.

This time the glory was built from the back, with the triumphant team winning the title without conceding a single goal along the way.

After overcoming a tough group, Canonbury drew 0-0 with St Joan of Arc School in the semi-final, eventually winning 2-1 on penalties. They then beat William Tyndale School 1-0 in the final to capture the trophy and spark wild scenes of celebration.

Next up it’s the girls’ turn to take to the pitch, with their Year 3&4 Cup kicking off as we went to press. We will reveal the big winners next week.
