Grimeborn’s on song at the Arcola with a wealth of short-run opera productions

The Grimeborn Opera Festival continues at Arcola Theatre, Dalston, with some splendid short-run productions.

This Friday, Saturday and Sunday (August 3, 4 and 5), Opera Algeria is putting on a double-bill centred on strong female characters, Rita and L’ Heure Espagnole. The pieces are based on music by Donizetti and Ravel respectively. Live piano accompaniment.

On Saturday and Sunday (August 4 and 5), Opera Mio and Co-Productions are putting on A Fantastic Bohemian – The Tales of Hoffman Revisited. It’s an immersive opera experience, performed across three spaces. Piano, cello, clarinet and violin accompaniment.

Next Tuesday (August 7) and seven performances thereafter are performances of Arcola Theatre’s own staging by Jonathan Moore of Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Greek. With libretto by Steven Berkoff, the piece is a riotous, contemporary retelling of the Oedipus myth last performed two years ago at the Royal Opera House by Mid-Wales Opera with Marcus Farnsworth in the title role. In his staging, Jonathan Moore brings this groundbreaking East End masterpiece home with his new 30th-anniversary production. Full orchestral accompaniment.

On Monday, Tuesday and Friday (August 6, 7 and 10), there are performances of Fulham Opera’s new opera The Prometheus Revolution by David Burstein. Star-crossed lovers, rebellion and revolution feature in this ravishing new opera with the sounds of Vaudeville, Broadway and pop ballads. Piano accompaniment.

Next Thursday (August 9) and Saturday week (August 11), Fulham Opera’s second production at Grimeborn is Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammer­moor. What happens when your love destroys you? In Italian with English surtitles/live piano music.
