Gunners boss Wenger keeps faith with his dynamic duo

Arsene Wenger says he deserves credit for sticking by Ozil and Sanchez

ARSENE Wenger says he deserves “credit” for having complete faith in Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez. Both Ozil and Sanchez will be out of contract next summer and while the club remain keen on extending their current deals there’s little sign that any agreements are about to be reached.

The lack of progress around the negotiating table has left some fans calling for them to be dropped from the team in favour of players who want to be at the club. But that didn’t stop the dynamic duo from playing their part in arguably Arsenal’s best performance of the season so far on Saturday when they beat their north London rivals 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium.

Reflecting on his continued faith, Wenger said: “If you have to give me one credit, it’s that I’ve never questioned them. I know them well and I know that when these guys go on the pitch they want to win the game. They’ve shown their commitment again against Tottenham. I’ve never questioned their commitment. They can have bad games but the problem is that, when a player gets near the end of his contract and then has a bad game, everybody says it’s because he’s going. Their interest is to play.”

The Gunners won plaudits from pundits and supporters alike at the weekend as goals from Shkodran Mustafi and Sanchez sank Spurs.

But Wenger admitted that that performance alone wouldn’t be enough to get Ozil and Sanchez to sign new deals.

“I’ve been in this job long enough to know that days like the one we had on Saturday are not enough,” he said. “The quality of the contract has to be good and enough for them as well. “I am convinced that they love the club and they love the team. All the rest will be decided soon. When? I don’t really know. I’m not alone in mastering that.

“The whole thing has to be right and they have to be happy,” Wenger added. “I believe that they both love the club, and they want to stay, but there are other top clubs out there who offer good contracts as well.”
