Handy trio pack a punch at nationals

IT proved a knockout Saturday for a top trio from Islington Boxing Club as they booked their places in the quarter-finals of the England Boxing Development Championships.

Masood Abdullah, Slavisa Gegic and Chris Cunningham all reigned in the ring at Turner’s Boxing Academy in Camberley as the best boxers from across the capital took on the best boxers that the Southern Counties has to offer.

Competing in the Under-60kg Class ‘B’ category, Masood made an explosive start as he recorded his second stoppage in the championships. Taking on Joel Forte from Moneyfields ABC, the Islington man recovered from taking a hard shot early on to wear down his taller opponent, landing strong lefts and rights to the head and body. The referee gave Forte two standing eight counts in the opening round before waving the bout off.

Not to be outdone, club-mate Slavisa was just as commanding in his Under-69kg Class ‘B’ showdown as he stretched his undefeated record to 20 wins. The high-octane display was packed with pressure and powerful punching, and ended with the referee giving his opponent, Glyn Davis from Whitehawk ABC, two standing eight counts before calling a halt to the action.

Chris Cunningham wrapped up a hat-trick of victories for the Upper Holloway-based club by beating Creekside ABC’s Alex Coles. Competing in the Under-75kg Class ‘B’ category, Chris outworked his opponent to gain a unanimous win – and with it a place in the National semi-finals after he received a bye in the quarter-finals.

Chris will now return to the ring on Saturday, October 20 at the Oasis Leisure Centre in Swindon, along with Islington club-mate Laura Weis.

Meanwhile Slavisa and Masood will be boxing again tomorrow (Friday) in the National quarter-finals at Basildon Sports Centre, where they will be joined by team-mate Sunni Torgman.
