Haydn’s ill-fated opera The Apothecary comes to Hampstead in a fully staged production from Baroquestock

11 October, 2018 — By Sebastian Taylor

Joseph Haydn

AN incomplete 1768 opera by Haydn, Lo Speziale – The Apothecary – is being performed at the Heath Street Baptist Church, Hampstead, next Thursday through to Saturday.

The opera has two complete acts. Although the text for the third act survives, Haydn’s music was lost in a fire. Composers have now put together a score to replace Haydn’s lost music by choosing music by him and his contemporaries.

The opera follows the story of an apothecary, his young assistant and a wealthy customer who get the hots for the apothecary’s young ward who’s only in love with the assistant. Jealousy and trickery play havoc but, in the end, the assistant fools the older men and wins back the young ward.

The Baroquestock team at Heath Street Baptist Church has brought together a superb cast and the Instante collective of period-instrument players.

• The Apothecary runs from October 18-20 at Heath Street Baptist Church, Hampstead, 7.30pm/6.30pm pre-show talk, tickets £20/cons £15,
