Highgate Choral Society set to pack a punch with Poulenc and Janáček
07 March, 2019 — By Michael White
Tenor Nicky Spence
HIGHGATE Choral Society has always liked big repertoire: the stuff that packs a punch. And they have two decidedly impactful pieces in their concert this Saturday at All Hallows Church, Gospel Oak.
One is Poulenc’s Gloria, an occasionally outrageous, blowsy piece that owes something to Stravinsky but rather more to Poulenc’s unashamed love of a good tune.
And the other is Janáček’s Glagolitic Mass, a dazzling setting of the Eucharistic liturgy all Catholics know, but in a language called Old Church Slavonic – which gives it a certain edge, and presents a certain challenge to English choirs, although the HCS are old hands at this sort of thing and will no doubt bring it off without tears.
Ronald Corp conducts. And look out for the exuberant Nicky Spence who sings the tenor solos – not that you’ll have to look hard: he’s a larger-than-life character.
