In the wake of this fatal fire important questions remain to be answered

Tragic fire in Daleham Gardens

• LAST week a fire at 31 Daleham Gardens tragically took the life of a resident (Survivors of fatal Belsize Park fire demand answers, November 23).

Our thoughts are with her family, friends and loved ones. Since the tragedy local residents have offered support to their neighbours who have been displaced by the fire. We have met with those who were evacuated and are pressing Camden Council to make sure that their needs are addressed now and over the coming weeks.

Important questions remain to be answered, which may have much wider implications for fire safety in similar buildings, also owned by Camden Council, across the borough.

We want to thank the emergency services and in particular the fire brigade who were able to arrive on the scene in under five minutes, within their target response time.

As ever, they worked with great professionalism and bravery. As we approach Christmas and Hanukkah, it’s important for all of us to make sure that electrical lights, candles and any open fires, are carefully checked and attended. And that smoke detectors and fire alarms are fully operational.
Since 2015 it has been a legal requirement for landlords to have detectors in rented properties.

The website of the London Fire Brigade has various safety recommendations and you can book a free fire safety visit with them online or by calling 0800 028 4428.

Local councillors will continue to support residents displaced by this awful fire. We will also work with the council to make sure that a proper and transparent investigation gets to the bottom of whether Camden can avoid a repeat of what went wrong on Daleham Gardens.

We know that people across Camden will be worried and will want to know that the council is doing all that it can to protect residents whether in high-rise estates or street-front properties.
