TOTTENHAM looked all set to clinch their first signing for 18 months last night (Wednesday) – but it wasn’t the much-hyped swoop for midfielder Tanguy Ndombele.

The French midfielder is reportedly on the verge of a £55million move from Lyon, but all the talk as the New Journal went to press was about young Leeds United winger Jack Clarke. The highly rated 18-year-old was at Spurs’ training ground ready to seal a deal worth an initial payment of £8.5m.

Clarke will join the senior squad when pre-season training begins in July and has enough talent to compete for a place in matchday squads, despite his limited experience in the Championship.

Meanwhile, the pursuit of in-demand Ndombele also looks close to coming to an end. Lyon have accepted a bid and the midfielder has agreed a five-year contract to move to north London. Spurs have refused to comment on the situation, but according to sources, close to the player, the move is about to become reality.

Capturing the 22-year-old will spark a merry-go-round involving Victor Wanyama and Eric Dier, who are both coming off of a season beset with injuries, and are most at risk of being shown the exit door.

It is believed Wanyama is the more likely player to move, as Dier has a close relationship with manager Mauricio Pochettino and can play as a centre-back and right-back, as well as a holding midfielder, offering better options to squad depth.
