Join the protests against Israeli annexation
02 July, 2020
• THE Israeli government is proposing to annex large parts of Palestine (“the West Bank”).
This is something Israel’s minister of settlement affairs Tzipi Hotovely has campaigned for as far back as 2012.
In December 2019 she said “we emphasise that the idea of a Palestinian state is one that the state of Israel completely opposes”.
Our prime minister Boris Johnson recently told parliament: “I believe that what is proposed by Israel would amount to a breach of international law.
We have strongly objected. We believe profoundly in a two-state solution and we will continue to make that case.”
I strongly support that position and hope the government adopts the call of shadow foreign secretary Lisa Nandy for a boycott of goods from the occupied territories in the event that annexation takes place.
What has this to do with us, you may ask?
Well, Ms Hotovely has been nominated as the next Israeli ambassador to the UK and if appointed would presumably come to live in the ambassador’s residence in Avenue Road in Swiss Cottage, the ward I have the privilege to represent.
There is a day of action on Saturday to resist the illegal annexation and I urge as many of you as possible to take part in events in protest against annexation.
