The Nutcracker and I – a multimedia performance by Alexandra Dariescu
THE third London Piano Festival gets under way next Wednesday evening at Kings Place. Festival artistic directors Katya Apekisheva and Charles Owen are playing a “four-hands/two pianos” concert featuring masterpieces from the French and Spanish repertoire. Included in the programme are the three Nocturnes by Debussy who died in 1918, and the centenary is being marked in the festival.
All the artists come together on Saturday evening for the popular Two-Piano Marathon. “That’s when sparks really fly,” says Katya. “We mix and match pianists, bringing together some who have played as a duo, and others who will be meeting for the first time.”
The festival closes on Sunday evening with a unique multimedia performance of the Nutcracker created by pianist Alexandra Dariescu. A real-life ballerina interacts with exquisite digitally animated characters so the the audience can follow the music and engage with pianist and ballerina as they “dance” across the screen.
