DEBUTANTS Kings of the Castle made a winning start to life in the Chalk Farm Pool League on Monday night when they beat fellow newcomers Northumberland Arms in a gripping nine-frame showdown.

Brothers Chris and Rob Kemp joined forces to win their crucial doubles contest as Kings of the Castle eked out a 5-4 victory in the Division Three contest, which was held at the Northumberland Arms’s home table in King’s Cross.

The Peel Pirates recorded the biggest victory across the league’s three divisions when they beat The Oak 8-1 in another match that featured a host of new players.

The result saw the Pirates sail to the top of the third division.

There was no doubting the biggest contest of the day as the Chalk Farm Pool League signalled the start of their 40th season. It came in Division One, where champions Boston Arms ran out 6-3 winners over fierce rivals Sir Robert Peel.
