Landlord is fined £13k over poor state of property with multiple tenants

12 May, 2017 — By Jane Clinton

A LANDLORD has been left with a bill of £13,000 after leaving a series of hazards at a property in Crouch Hill which he rented out to multiple tenants.

Town Hall officers discovered failings at the property in Hillrise Road including a lack of fire alarms, insecure handrails and banisters, and rotten window frames. A window in disrepair and a hole in the wall were also found during the inspection last autumn.

The council issued landlord Erdal Korkmaz, from Enfield, with an “improvement notice”, obliging him to carry out repairs on the property but the problems remained unresolved.

On April 27, Korkmaz pleaded guilty to operating an unlicensed house of multiple occupancy (HMO), failing to comply with the notice and failing to comply with HMO laws.

Korkmaz was ordered by Highbury Magistrates’ Court to pay fines totalling £12,000, along with costs of £1,124 and a victim surcharge of £100.
