IT would have been hero lifeguard Glyn Roberts’ 19th marathon – but he will be missing from this year’s 26-mile slog through the streets of London.
Glyn died suddenly on New Year’s Day, and now three colleagues and friends are taking his place at the April 23 marathon to raise funds for British Heart Foundation.
Parliament Hill Lido supervisor Paul Jeal said: “Glyn was due to run it, so we figured the best thing for us to do was to do it for him, to do it in his memory. “We know he’ll be with us every step of the way. He’ll be there alongside us.”

Glyn ran first-aid training courses, campaigned to have defibrillators in public places, and had saved lives using his skills. He died from a heart attack, making it fitting, his colleagues added, that they raise money for British Heart Foundation.

Glyn was renowned for his dedication to helping charitable causes. The marathon fundraiser is just one of a number of events planned by Heath staff and lido users to honour the memory of their friend and colleague.
Chairwoman of Parliament Hill Lido Users’ Group Eleanor Kennedy is about to embark on a 180-mile walk through rough terrain and across 10 Scottish islands as part of the project.
She said: “As the chair of the users’ group, I wanted to do something. The lifeguards here are so brilliant. They are here every morning to meet us with a smile and Glyn was a special person. I wanted to do something on behalf of the swimmers – we counted him as a friend. He looked after us all year round.”
A gig and picnic in his memory are planned for Parliament Hill bandstand this summer. Brizzler – a band featuring Heath police officer Gary Doswell on drums – will play popular covers of hits from the 60s and 70s, including many tunes Glyn loved, on Sunday, July 9.
