The Golden Lion team celebrate winning the Chalk Farm Pool League’s Divisional Cup after beating Slattery’s
THE Golden Lion’s “captain fantastic”, Aaron Gourlay, overcame snapping his cue to record a fabulous seven-ball clearance under pressure and lead his team to the Chalk Farm Pool League’s much-coveted Divisional Cup.
Held at the Cock Tavern in Somers Town, the Lions started the final against Slattery’s two frames down due to a handicap system designed to help even out the action at the table.
Having chalked up more than 30 points more than Slattery’s in Division Two this season, however, there was little surprise when the Lions roared back into the match. Richard Evans got the ball rolling when he jumped on an unforced error by Chris Miles to snatch the opening frame of the evening.
It ignited a run of wins that ended with the Lions taking a 4-2 lead, but in a night of high drama, Slattery’s battled back to square the score and send the final into a final-frame decider.
Cometh the hour, cometh the captain, as Gourlay and Shaun Pollard teamed up, and even shared a cue, to beat Miles and Michael Slattery in the final doubles match to seal a 5-4 victory.
