A LIBERAL Democrat councillor has reached the final stages in her race to become the party’s London mayoral candidate.
Luisa Porritt’s interest in standing against Sadiq Khan at next May’s elections was first revealed by the New Journal last month.
And this morning (Thursday), the former MEP, who represents Belsize on Camden Council, was confirmed on a two-woman shortlist ahead of a month-long selection contest.
Her opponent will be Geeta Sidhu-Robb, the former vice-chair of the People’s Vote campaign.
Cllr Porritt said: “Sadiq Khan has let down Londoners who needed him to help them get on the housing ladder, detoxify our polluted air and make our young people feel safe. Londoners won’t waste votes on a Tory candidate fighting threats to oust him.
“As mayoral candidate, I will bring my experience and energy to drive the Liberal Democrat campaign for a greener, safer and fairer London.”
The former journalist won her council seat from the Tories in 2018, having joined the party in the wake of the UK’s Brexit vote.
She later successfully stood for the European parliament, representing London before the divorce from the EU was confirmed earlier this year and MEPs returned home.
The winner of the contest will be announced on October 13.
