Man clings on for life outside window of flat fire in Holloway Road

'One man jumped from the second floor and another guy was on the top floor for ages'

11 September, 2019 — By Calum Fraser

FIREFIGHTERS rescued a man clinging on for life out of a fourth-floor flat as a fire tore through his home.

Passers-by tried to rescue the man using scaffolding and ladders but they were unable to get high enough as he lay on the window-sill while black smoke billowed out of the flat in Holloway Road near Kingsdown Road today (Wednesday).

Another resident in the block jumped from a lower flat, eyewitnesses claimed.

About 40 firefighters were called to the terraced block at about 1pm today and the man was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Youcef, who works in the Pizza Da Milano takeaway opposite the flats, said: “There was smoke everywhere. People were shouting and screaming.

“Two people started getting scaffolding ladders out to try and reach the man on the top floor. I was really worried for him.”

Joiner Luke Hasson also witnessed the blaze.

He said: “One man jumped from the second floor and another guy was on the top floor for ages.

“He was laying on the balcony and smoke started pouring out the balcony. I thought he was going to jump as well. It was intense.”

The fire was under control by about 2pm.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
