THERE were colourful lights, market stalls and homemade cakes to give professionals a run for their money at the Archway lights switch-on.
Celebrity MasterChef winner John Partridge was the star guest at the event and he also helped to judge the first ever “Archway Bake Off”. Ten keen bakers entered the categories including “the most delicious”, “the best looking” and “people’s choice”.
The bake-off, sponsored by Wenzel’s Bakery, raised funds to help Junction Road charity The Toy Project to move to a bigger shop.

“It was a huge success bringing the community together through cake,” said charity founder Jane Garfield. “The star cake of the day was made by Alison Powell who made a fabulous pear tree with text ending in… ‘Mr Partridge in a pear tree!’”
There was also a Christmas market and performances from the Cahula Hoops and the Whittington Steel Band. In the run-up to Christmas, Archway Market will be open every Saturday for Christmas gifts and speciality foods.
Whitecross Street Christmas lights will be switched on at 4.45pm tonight (Friday).
