Man believed to be a delivery driver working in West Hampstead

A MOTORCYCLIST has died in a collision with a skip tow truck and a car in West Hampstead.

The delivery driver was pronounced dead in Mill Lane close to the junction with Westbere Road.

The Met said they had been called at 1pm and the collision involved the motorbike, a lorry and a second car.

Witnesses suggested the biker may have swerved to avoid an opening car door.

There have been no arrests.

John Rishton, who was on his way home to Kilburn with a bag of supermarket shopping, said: “There was a terrible bang and then shouting.

“You just feel so sorry for the guy, and the driver. It’s just an awful scene, something no one wants to see – there’s not much more you can say about it.

“What I would say is that I do walk up here a lot and traffic does come along this point by the bridge very quickly, the road pinches too and there is the turning off up to Hampstead School.”

Police officers had cordoned off the road both ways to vehicles and pedestrians.

The Beckford Primary School parents association had warned parents coming to the school gates nearby about road closures.

One of several motorcyclists standing at the cordon said they believed they knew the man and that he was a delivery driver working out of West Hampstead.

A Met statement said: “Police were called at 1pm on Wednesday to reports of a road traffic collision on Mill Lane, near the junction of Westbere Road.

The collision involved a car, motorcycle and a lorry. Officers attended along with the ambulance service, and the air ambulance was also requested.

“Very sadly, despite best efforts of paramedics, a man – the motorcyclist – was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Police are in the process of informing his next of kin. The other drivers stopped at the scene and are assisting police with enquiries.”
