No more will sunlight filter through these leaves

20 July, 2017

St James Gardens

• I HAVE seen many generations walk by me, coronations of kings and queens, untold wars and times of peace.

Look, there is a gentleman walking with his little dog, a young couple holding hands, a mother trying to catch her toddler on the grass, children running, carrying satchels. It must be school time.

No more will sunlight filter through these leaves. Listen, the whine of chainsaws and the roar of bulldozers are coming, gaze upon me one last time. Soon I will be gone.

Who speaks these words? “It is I, a little garden called St James, that will be destroyed for ever.”
