North Bridge House teacher selected to lead Chartered College of Teaching Languages Network
01 August, 2017
The Chartered College of Teaching (CCT) has launched its Chartered College network programme to bring together educators to work on issues of direct concern to classroom practice.
Dan MacPherson, Head of Modern Languages and Assistant Head Teacher at North Bridge House Senior School and Sixth Form, Canonbury, has been selected to lead the UK Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) network.
He says, “I wanted to set up the Languages network firstly to complement the work of all the existing subject bodies, but also to bring research and practice into closer alignment.
“The CCT gives us the opportunity to engage with the big thinkers in MFL pedagogy and I hope people will take up the opportunity to hear them speak.
“I would like to create a space where MFL teachers can discuss relevant pedagogical developments in a subject-specific context and then experiment with ways to improve their practice.
“This is so important in MFL, as national data in the UK shows fewer young people are studying languages at an advanced level and there is the potential of a possible Brexit-induced recruitment crisis.
“We need to find ways of raising the status of our subject and ensuring there are opportunities for colleagues to exchange ideas on a national level. I hope the CCT Languages Network meets these objectives.”
The Chartered College network programme includes a broad range of face-to-face events and online forums. There are three types of network: local, thematic and hub networks.
Thematic networks, such as the MFL network, are diverse in format and focus: some are organised in collaboration with subject associations whilst others explore aspects of practice with the support of expert organisations and experienced practitioners.
