Open up the sports pitch again to engage with the young

04 October, 2019

• YOUTH workers in Camden, Kentish Town and Highgate have said in the New Journal that they have seen dwindling numbers of young people and that they intend to reach them around chicken shops instead.

May I suggest that there is a link between the dwindling numbers of participants in youth amenities and the shrinking of investment in services?

Five years ago, the sports pitch in Castlehaven was always open and always accessible for casual use by young people.

We’ve seen a dramatic reduction since then as the space is rented out to more affluent groups and clubs instead.

Chicken shops? A space for preventative engagement with local young people is already here – we just need to open it up to them.
