AN orchestra has moved into a secondary school in Tufnell Park, renting space and helping with music lessons.

The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (OAE) moved into converted office space at Acland Burghley this week after agreeing a rental deal. It will both rehearse there and teach pupils.

Headteacher Nick John said: “There’s a sense that the collaboration will lead to mutual benefits. We are renting out office accommodation with an agreement there will be educational activity.”

Mr John said he is keen to let pupils watch some OAE rehearsals as a form of “relaxation”.

The move has been made possible with £120,000 from The Linbury Trust, one of the Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts. Three offices  have been adapted for the administration team, alongside a recording studio and library.

The Grade II-listed school assembly hall will be used as a rehearsal space.

Mr John said: “This will benefit not just our school but Camden as a whole. We will be able to develop education programmes, work with other schools so all children in Camden can benefit from this.”

A similar project was undertaken in Germany in 2015 when The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie moved into a state comprehensive school in Bremen, Germany.
