Our schools need proper funding

‘Financially our schools are on their knees’
• WE fully support the Camden head teachers who, in their letter to primary school parents and carers last week, outlined the tremendous financial pressures our schools are under,
It is a tribute to our Camden family of schools that these schools are campaigning together to highlight and challenge the woeful lack of government funding for our schools.
Like them, we are increasingly concerned about the effect of the government’s funding rules on Camden schools. Financially our schools are on their knees, and there are particular threats to funding for some of our most vulnerable young people.
The present situation is simply not viable. We will continue to work closely with our schools, governors, teaching unions and, of course, parents and carers to ensure the education of every Camden child is properly funded. Despite the turmoil in politics at the moment this is an issue that cannot wait.
That is why we have written to the Secretary of State for Education Damian Hinds demanding that the issue of school funding in Camden and across the country is placed at the top of the in-tray of the new prime minister.
We also urge parents and carers to get involved, and we hope that many will join the Unison rally and events on schools funding next month.
We are doing everything we can to support our Camden schools. It’s time the government did so too by funding them properly after too many years of financial strain.
