Speculation has suggested Mesut Ozil could be sold this month
MESUT Ozil won’t be leaving Arsenal this month – and could even stay at the club beyond his current contract, according to his agent.
The German playmaker has been left out of the starting line-up on numerous occasions this season, with Arsenal head coach Unai Emery citing back and knee injuries for Ozil’s absence.
The speculation, however, is that Emery prefers more defensively minded players, and that Ozil could be sold as soon as possible to get his £350,000-a-week wages off the payroll. But his agent, Dr Erkut Sogut, insists his player isn’t going anywhere.
“I would prefer not to speak publicly about Mesut’s situation but, given the recent speculation linking him with a move away from Arsenal, I do feel it is important to provide some clarity, so we can end this and focus on football,” he told sports news outlet Goal.
“Mesut signed a new contract last January, because he saw his future at Arsenal, and nothing has changed in his mind.
“He wants to stay for the duration of that contract and maybe even longer. Mesut is 100 per cent committed to Arsenal Football Club. He loves the club, shares its values and does not want to be anywhere else.
“He is proud to wear the shirt and honoured to represent Arsenal on and off the pitch. He takes his responsibilities – including being selected as one of the captains this season – very seriously, and has a great relationship with his team-mates, the staff and the fans.”
Meanwhile, Emery has hinted that “one or two” new faces could be arriving at the Emirates this month.
Injuries and suspensions have left Arsenal short in defence this season, and with Aaron Ramsey set to leave there will be a void to fill in midfield. Quizzed on the chances of the Gunners doing some January shopping, Emery said: “It’s not easy to change or improve our team with the possibilities in the transfer market, but the club is working. We are looking at different possibilities.
“Maybe we can improve in the transfer market if we get the opportunity. Maybe we can sign one or two players, but it’s not easy. We shall see what happens.”
