Ozil’s Arsenal future hanging in the balance?

Reports suggest the German playmaker could leave in January

ARSENAL are rumoured to be ready to offload Mesut Ozil in January – providing they can find a suitor willing to entertain the playmaker’s wages.

Gunners gaffer Unai Emery left the 30-year-old out of his Premier League squad to face Manchester United at Old Trafford on Monday night. When quizzed about the decision before kick-off, Emery simply said: “He is not here. I decided the first 11 and the squad.”

It was a tactical move that once again highlights the Spaniard’s reluctance to play Ozil in demanding away fixtures.

To say Ozil has been a peripheral figure under Emery would be an understatement, with the number 10 featuring in just one of the club’s seven Premier League matches this season.

But if the growing reports that the north Londoners are now even willing to accept a loan deal to pave the way for his exit are true, it won’t be easy.

Ozil is settled in the capital, and he also put pen-to-paper on a new £350,000-a-week contract at the Emirates last year, meaning any interested clubs would have to agree to pick up some hefty wages – although it is also claimed that the Gunners could be willing to still pay part.

One former Arsenal player who believes that Ozil is on borrowed time at the club is Ray Parlour.

Speaking on the decision to leave him at home when the rest of Emery’s squad travelled to Manchester, the Romford Pele told talkSPORT: “We don’t know what happens behind the scenes, we don’t know the atmosphere at training and we don’t know his attitude at training.

“Maybe Emery is looking at it, wanting a reaction and he’s not getting a reaction, so he’s saying, ‘I’m going to go with the youngsters instead’.

“He’s been brave by doing it because Ozil is a World Cup winner and he’s on a massive contract at Arsenal.

“But he did probably need someone like Ozil at Old Trafford to open the door for Aubameyang – he didn’t get a lot of service did he? But Ozil… I don’t know what the future holds for him.

“I think that could be the last straw.”
