Robert Peel wrested the Tarrant Cup from holders King’s Cross Hurricanes

CLENCHING their fists in a victory salute and beaming with pride, players from Sir Robert Peel celebrated in style on Monday after being crowned the top of the pots.

The boys from NW5 edged past fierce rivals King’s Cross Hurricanes 5-4 in a topsy-turvy clash at the Boston Arms in Tufnell Park to win the prestigious Liam Tarrant Cup – dubbed the FA Cup of the Chalk Farm Pool League.

The opening frame set the tone for a cup classic as Danny James followed up his scorching break off shot by clearing the table in one visit to give Peel the lead.

The Hurricanes were soon level, however, as star potter Rupe Ward displayed precision control of the white ball and confident shot selection to beat recently crowned singles champion Chris Heim.

The teams continued to exchange blows with quality safety and sublime potting, sending the best-of-nine frame battle of the baize to a final frame decider.

Cometh the hour, cometh the man! And so it proved in the nail-biting finale as Peel’s Tony Stevens pulled out a classy, composed clearance to win the game and spark wild scenes of celebration.

“I had to go outside and compose myself,” said the delighted match-winner afterwards. “I was in such a zone of concentration, I blanked out everything and just took the game one shot at a time.”
