Aubameyang: ‘Signing for this special club was never in doubt’

ARSENAL fans finally got the news they have been waiting for this evening when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang announced that he has signed a new three-year contract.

After months of speculation the 31-year-old striker and club captain is rumoured to have become the Gunners highest earner with a new deal that significantly eclipses his previous £200,000-a-week wages.

Aubameyang, who scored in Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Fulham on Saturday, insisted he was always going to stay at the Emirates.

“Signing for this special club was never in doubt,” he said. “It’s thanks to our fans, my team-mates, my family and everybody at this club that I feel like I belong here.”

Aubameyang’s contract was due to expire at the end of the 2020-21 season, meaning he would have been free to talk to other clubs from January.

News of the three-year deal comes as a tremendous fillip for Mikel Arteta, who was always confident Aubameyang was going to remain at the club.

“It was important for Pierre-Emerick to stay with us. He’s a superb player with an incredible mentality,” said the Arsenal manager.

“Being the player to have taken the least amount of time to reach 50 goals with this club tells you everything you need to know about him and his way of working.”

Since joining Arsenal from Borussia Dortmund in 2018 for a then club-record fee of £56m, Aubameyang has scored 72 goals in 111 appearances in all competitions. In 86 Premier League appearances he has scored 55 goals and made 12 assists.

Arteta added: “He’s an important leader for the team and a big part of what we’re building. He wants to be up there with the best players in the world and leave his mark. He can achieve that here.”
