Severe injuries to the victim, who requested not to be named

A BRUTAL attack has left a 60-year-old woman in need of surgery.

Police are appealing for information after the woman, who was visiting from Austria, was punched repeatedly in the face by a man in Warwick Avenue, Maida Vale. At around 8pm last Friday, March 17, she was approached by a man in his late 20s who tried to “chat her up” in Formosa Road, police said.

The man, who she described as white with short brown hair and brown eyes, grabbed her and launched a vicious assault which left her with substantial facial injuries.

Detective Constable Mike Reilly, from Westminster CID, said: “This was a vicious unprovoked attack that has left the victim very shaken. Her injuries are so severe that she requires surgery. Warwick Avenue is a busy area, especially at 8pm on a Friday evening. Someone must have seen something and I’d appeal for anyone with information to come forward as soon as possible so we can bring the perpetrator to justice.”

The victim was found by a passer-by, who called the emergency services, and she was taken to hospital. Anyone with information is asked to contact Westminster CID via 020 7321 8260 or @MetCC.

Information can also be reported anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org
