Police given extra powers after ‘violent disorder with weapons’ in Queen’s Crescent
Dispersal zone in place for 48 hours
21 March, 2017 — By William McLennan
POLICE have introduced a “dispersal zone” in Queen’s Crescent after what they described as “violent disorder with weapons” last night.
Witnesses described groups of young men roaming the streets with their hoods up, carrying baseball bats.
The dispersal zone gives officers the power to order somebody to leave the area if they suspect they might commit “crime or disorder”. Failing to comply with an officer’s order to leave the area is a criminal offence.
Police are attempting to establish if the suspects lived locally or had travelled from outside the area.
The dispersal zone – issued under section 35 of the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act – came into effect at 8:45pm last night (Monday) and will last for 48 hours.
