A PROLIFIC burglar who was “caught red-handed” leaving a house in West Hampstead with a backpack full of stolen goods has been jailed.
Jamal Dahdouh was in the process of plundering a house in Fairhazel Gardens in September when police officers arrived just in time to arrest him on his way out of the front door.
His haul included several laptops, cash and a large quantity of expensive jewellery, which officers were able to return to the owners.
Police Constable John Hounsell, from the Hampstead and Highgate safer neighbourhood policing team, said: “We were called by reports of a burglary taking place so there was a big response and we surrounded the house, covering each exit.
“But then the front door opened and out the burglar came. He jumped on a bicycle and tried to cycle away but we stopped him.
PC Hounsell added: “He was caught red-handed – he may as well have had a bag with ‘SWAG’ written on it. The chances of catching a burglar in the act are usually minuscule. They’ve either left already or it turns out to be the cleaner, so this was a great result.”
Mr Dahdouh, 46, of no fixed abode, was charged with one count of burglary with intent to steal and one count of breach of Criminal Behaviour Order.
He appeared at Wood Green Crown Court on November 11 where he was sentenced to two years and four months.
Inspector Dave Hodges said: “This was a great example of how proactive policing from our neighbourhood teams leads to criminals being taken off the streets.
“Burglary is a crime which deserves being imprisoned for, so I welcome the court’s sentence.”
