‘The cut to route 25 has to be reversed’

• THE 25 bus is the capitals busiest route, carrying 20 million passengers in the year to April 2018.

Full double-deck buses are the norm on the route. Up to December 1 2018 that included the section along New Oxford Street. Removing Route 25 between Oxford Circus and Holborn Viaduct has put further pressure on the Central line over one of its busiest sections.

Trains run at capacity for much of the time and cannot be expected to absorb displaced bus passengers without an impact on the overall operation of the service. On the same day as the cut – December 1 – faulty signalling at Chancery Lane brought the Central line to a standstill.

Save Our Buses is concerned that any operating failure of the Central line will leave no direct public transport to Mile End and Stratford from Oxford Circus, Tottenham Court Road and Holborn stations. The cut to the 25 has removed step-free access for many passengers.

Few Central line stations are fully accessible. This calls into question Transport For London’s commitment to people with lower levels of mobility. The cut to route 25 has to be reversed.
