Review: Gloria at Hampstead Theatre

Having worked in a sales environment for 10 years, and also produced a production of David Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross, I thought I was an expert on the office grind.

However, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ Gloria opened my eyes even more alarmingly to the murky world of office politics. The writer worked for the New Yorker as a (must get this right) Assistant Associate Editor for three years, and is a Fulbright Scholar.

We are introduced to various advertising characters in the office – the willing intern (Bayo Gbadamosi), who is taken for granted by the ambitious Dean (Colin Morgan), the obnoxious Harvard-educated Kendra (Kae Alexander), who thinks she’s slumming it in advertising and is forever having a smoke break, and the enigmatic Gloria, who is the catalyst (spoiler permitted) to the piece, with catastrophic effects.

The most sympathetic of the team is Lorin (well played by Bo Poraj) who appears in both sections of the production as the same character with the other actors doubling up.

Director Michael Longhurst injects much pace into the production, the players certainly go for it, and Lizzie Clachan’s set designs deserve a mention.
