FIREFIGHTERS were called to a school in Hampstead village this afternoon (Thursday).
A part of the second floor of the building in Heath Street used by Hearthside Prep was damaged.
Children and staff evacuated to school premises in New End. The building will not re-open tomorrow for the last day of the school year.
Headteacher, Katherine Vintiner, said: “I am incredibly proud of them [children], and the staff team for managing the incident so well, and very grateful to the fire brigade for their rapid response.”
John-Henry Baker, the music outreach coordinator from Heath Street Church, located next to the school, said: “We were in the church at the time. Fire alarms went off. They [children and teachers] were just lining up outside. Quite often they have fire drills assumed it was one of those.
“I saw fire engines turn up once kids were all gone to the other school. By that time there was smoke outside. Fire engines were here within ten minutes and got it under control quickly. We put tea and coffee out for firefighters and chocolate digestives.”
The fire was brought under control by 1.20pm. There are no reports of injuries.
