Cedric Soares has joined Arsenal on a six-month loan deal from Southampton

CEDRIC Soares completed an “unbelievable” switch to Arsenal on transfer deadline day – one that the Southampton defender admitted was “years” in the making.

The Portugal international became the second signing of the Mikel Arteta era after putting pen-to-paper on a six-month loan deal that will cost the Gunners in the region of £5million.

Soares will be out of contract at the Saints come the end of the season, meaning Arsenal will be free to offer the right-back a more permanent deal in the summer.

Reflecting on “a dream” move, the 28-year-old told Arsenal Player: “It has been a while, to be fair. We were close a few years ago, so it’s not the first time. It didn’t happen that time but now, thank God, it came true. I’m super happy.

“Obviously it was important for me in my career to come here. Southampton gave me the opportunity to play in the Premier League but obviously it’s amazing, this step, to come here and play for Arsenal.”

“To be able to reach this point is unbelievable. One hundred per cent I will give all my best every day and every game,” he added.

“I try to be a guy with energy, a player that goes up and down. I like to consider myself a team player, and yes, what can I say? It’s difficult when you need to talk about yourself! But again, I will give my 100 per cent for the team and for the fans.”

Arsenal’s technical director Edu said Cedric would “provide our squad with quality”.

Edu added: “I know he is a player who plays with absolute full commitment and energy. We are all looking forward to going into the last stages of the season with Cedric as part of the club.”

Soares is the second defender Arsenal have signed this week following Pablo Mari’s arrival from Flamengo on Wednesday.

However, he will have to wait a little longer before making his debut for the north Londoners after arriving at the Emirates Stadium with a foot injury. He is expected to be fit for the Newcastle game on February 16.
