SPURS fans heading to Wembley for the FA Cup semi-final today (Saturday) are planning to applaud throughout the 44th minute of the match as a tribute to Ugo Ehiogu, the club coach who died after suffering a heart attack in training.

Ehiogu, 44, the former Aston Villa and Middlesbrough defender who had been heading the Under-23s team at Spurs, collapsed at Tottenham’s training centre in Enfield on Thursday and tragically did not regain consciousness.

Both Tottenham and opponents Chelsea are expected to run out in black armbands this afternoon, as will Villa players contesting a derby match with Birmingham City in a championship league match tomorrow (Sunday).

Ugo Ehiogu’s final tweet – telling of how he had helped a homeless girl – has been widely shared since his death

A match between Tottenham’s Under-23s against Manchester United scheduled for Monday has been postponed.

Ehiogu had joined the coaching staff at Spurs in 2014, becoming a popular figure at the club. “Not once did he boast of his glittering playing career. Working at a level very different to that at which he’d played and excelled, he carried himself with the utmost humility, was a good and willing listener to those inside and outside of our coaching and playing staff and took personal pride in helping each individual player to improve, no detail overlooked during countless hours of training and guidance,” the club said in an obituary posted on its website.

“He stuck by his players week in, week out, no matter the results on the field and when it was time to go home, he’d turn away from the exit door and instead go and lend his experience to coaching sessions for our younger age groups. His passion for the beautiful game shone through every day, reflected in his beaming, unwavering smile.”
