26 JS Bach cantatas at eight Sunday concerts
The tenth and final year of playing Bach’s complete cantatas gets under way this Sunday (January 21) at the Royal Academy of Music, Marylebone Road.
Being performed in German are Prepare yourself, my soul; A Terrible end shall sweep you away; Praise waiteth for Thee, O God; and Sing unto the Lord a new song!
Overall, 26 Bach cantatas are being performed at eight Sunday morning concerts in 2018, a highlight being the great Magnificat conducted by Jane Glover on February 18.
“For those unfamiliar with the format of our concerts, we do not follow a strict liturgical path when deciding which works to perform throughout the year,” says RAM principal Jonathan Freeman-Attwood.
“The cantatas are programmed in ways which we feel make sense musically, often binding or juxtaposing styles to bring additional perspectives to this inimitable oeuvre.”
